Personalizing my home..

I hope everyone had a nice Halloween! We had lots of trick-or-treaters, and they were all cute and (most) were very polite. I really love the community aspect of Halloween. It's fun to see all the kids and their parents out and about and having fun. This fall I have really been trying to make our house feel more like a home. We've lived here almost two years and I'm just now really starting to decorate. I think as newlyweds, we could only buy so much when we moved in, so now that it's a few years later I want to buy the little things that will make our house feel more like us and reflect our personalities. Here's some ideas on accessories.
For some reason, I vacillate between more of a country style and then more of a modern style. I think that's why it's been hard for me to buy things, I'm sort of all over the place. I think that just means I should buy different styles, and then change things around for the seasons and my moods. I think that's a good rationalization on why I should buy more.

Is anyone else schizophrenic when it comes to styles? If so, how do you deal with it?

Gorgeous pictures! I find that my style morphs as well, but I try to stay true to the things I have loved for a long time. I know I love blue & white and can't go wrong with it. I've learned over the last few years that I like things a little bit cleaner and less cluttered than I used to, so I'm better at editing.

Yes, I am the same way. I finally just decided to buy what I love and figure out how to make it all work. I also have a large accessories closet so I can switch things out when I get bored.

Beautiful inspiration pictures! I find that my tastes have changed over the years. I kind of buy what I like and make it work without thinking that a particular item belongs with a particular style. I look at it as that's how we bring our personalities into a house and make it into our home.

I'm with you - I like so many things, and can't decide what to get. So, I end up getting middle-of-the-road things a lot of the time, which isn't a good idea because shortly thereafter I'm sick of the stuff. I noticed that each of these photos has great lamps with chunky bases and big drum shades. I think you need one!

I also buy things just because I love them and decide what to do later. Maybe that's why I have a storage cabinet and four shelves filled with accessories in my basement. I won't even go into the amount of furniture and picture frames down there too.

I'm 100% with you. I never really know what style/decor look I'm going for. I do like the idea of just buying what you love and keeping it and switching it up when needed/wanted. My only problem with doing that {for me} is space. I have about zero of it.

My hand is raised high. I definitely sway from one end of the spectrum to the other depending on my mood. Being married has also made it hard. While I'm really glad that my sweet husband likes getting involved in our own design selections, I get frustrated that I can't design our home exactly as I would like. Luckily he does have good taste. We just prefer different styles. I love your idea of buying a mix of accessories and putting them out to suit your mood. I'm definitely going to keep that in mind whenever we move into a new house.

Absolutely ! I think I am traditional at heart but the older I get, the more my tastes are changing.

My style is all over the place. I love modern elements as well as rustic, cottage, classic, elegant. I have to say the only things I don't embrace are colonial and middle eastern. I think you can blend styles as long as you do so carefully and keeping the overall look in mind while selecting the pieces. My favorite rooms combine a variety of styles like a worn farm table and a fabulous chandelier.

Me too me too! One day I'm clean lines and all white, the next I'm antiques and rich colors. Totally schizophrenic! I noticed a series of like framed prints above a sofa in your inspiration pics - that could be a good jumping off point!

I love your rationalization!!

My style is a bit of a mix, too. I think it's fine. I just buy what I like.

I've always loved that first image that you posted.

I change out my accessories every few months. I find it keeps a space from getting stale. Focus on things you love and you won't be bored.

I have to agree with you. I'm a bit of mix as well. I tend to lean a little bit country a little bit modern and a little traditional. What a mix, but it works!

I totally am. I combine modern with shabby chic as I can't decide which I like more. Plus, I like the contrast!

Its called eclectic and its fabulous. Why choose one when you can mix it up and make it that much more interesting??!! Keep it connected with color or a theme and edit but mix it up. Some of the best spaces are done just as you say.....

I totally agree with you, I'm all over the place as well when it comes to a particular style. I decided to buy the things I love and incorporate them into my design. Sorry I've been MIA lately, I'm glad to be back. Thanks for all of your sweet comments and suggestions on the wedding.

I'm the opposite! I have accents and fun tchotchkes to add the "home" feeling. It's the main furniture pieces I can't afford to invest in just yet... all in good time, I keep telling myself.

Love your blog!
